Katherine Johnson
She was first hired to work for the National Advisory
Committee for Aeronautics in 1953. Johnson calculated the path for
Freedom 7 which was the spacecraft
that put the first U.S astronaut in space.
Johnson was part of the team to
calculate Apollo 11's flight, which sent
the first three men to the Moon. Johnson was part of the West Computers
whose job was to analyze test data and
mathematical computations to assist the
space program. In addition, she worked
on the first space shuttle program. She
was the first woman in her division to
receive credit as an author of a research
report.
